Welcome to South Prairie Elementary!
The South Prairie Elementary building is located south of Highway 44 at 500 S James Street. This building currently houses the Grimes students of grades kindergarten and first grade as well as 5 sections of second grade. We also offer a half-day optional kindergarten class for those who are school age, but aren't quite ready for full-day kindergarten. The fall of 2017 will bring many changes in our population as the district opens another elementary in Grimes and we transition to neighborhood schools.
South Prairie currently has a student population of approximately 625 students. In addition to our K-2nd grade classrooms, students attend special classes for art, guidance, music, media and physical education. We provide additional resources for students through Reading Recovery, Reading and Math interventions, Special Education, and TAG programs.
My name is Patty Morris and this is my third year as principal in the Dallas Center-Grimes School District. My family and I moved to Grimes from Corning, where I served as principal for the 12 years. I have been in education for more than 25 years, teaching every grade level from 1st-8th grade. I have been in several rural districts in Iowa, as well as the very urban Prince William County, Virginia, as my husband was stationed near there as a Marine. This gives me a wealth of experiences that have helped mold me into the person I am today. I received my bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, with a double major in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. I later obtained my Masters in Administration through Iowa State University.
My husband, Vilas, is a machinist with Marine Corps training. We have three children, Krista, Cody, and Garrett. Garrett is the only one still at home, and he is in 8th grade at DCG this year.
I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing district. The staff are all very dedicated professionals who truly believe all children can learn and will do whatever it takes to help them be successful. They collaborate daily as they work to meet the needs of each individual. I feel so very blessed to be a part of this community and am so grateful this is where my path has led.
