Oak View 7th graders are learning about current events in a really important way.
“We are learning about the war that is happening in Syria right now and the refugees are going off to many different countries,” says Owen Kleckner.
“We were all in a circle and we would ask questions,” adds Ryker Schutte. “We would talk about what everybody thought about what was going on.”
“We had the countries like Egypt, France, Jordan, Canada and America,” says Carter Neal. “Just learning about how their economy is doing with the refugee crisis and going back and forth on the debate.”
Social studies students are wrapping up this unit with a United Nations Debate Day. All countries represented are asked the same question, how can we support the Middle Eastern refugees?
“We were learning about how different countries had been handling it based on their economy and their size,” says Kleckner.
“I think it felt more realistic than a test because it made us feel like we are going back and forth,” adds Neal.
“My favorite part was coming to the end and coming to that proposed solution,” shares Schutte.
As debate day comes to a close, Oak View students are starting to reflect. Their takeaways from this project are incredible.
“How different people with different standpoints argue sometimes, but usually they come to a solution in the end,” says Kleckner.
“It just helps you show that no matter what you are doing here, there are so many real-world things that you can’t impact,” shares Neal.
