Service Learning at Oak View

Students at Oak View are working together in a really powerful way. Service learning projects focus on school and community impact. They also allow students the opportunity to problem-solve issues that impact their building and their community. Some projects are big. Some projects are small. They all make an impact and our students deserve praise.

Here are a few service learning projects that Oak View students have been working on this year.

Ellipsis Youth Shelter Donation Drive – Students are partnering with the Ellipsis Youth Shelter to learn more about homelessness in our community. Visit the QR code below to learn how you can help!

Crafts for Kids – Students donated craft supplies to the Ronald McDonald House.

Keeping Oak View Halls and School Beautiful – Students cleaned up the Oak View campus.

Perry/DCG Partnership – Students created a can/bottle drive to provide financial support to the Perry community. The drive will be held on Saturday, March 2 from 9:00-1:00 at the Grimes Hy-Vee.

The Book Reporters – Students created book recommendation displays for fellow classmates.

Tie Blankets for Kids – Students made fleece tie blankets that will be distributed to children facing difficult situations in our community.

Kindness for Kennybrook – Students created cards for residents at Kennybrook Village in Grimes.

Posters for Teachers – Students designed special shout outs for teachers at Oak View.

T-Shirt Bags for Food Pantries – Students designed bags for our local food pantries to use for customers.

DCG Game Day – Students planned the 2024 DCG Game Day event.

Student Council – Students helped create a student ambassador group at Oak View.

Student Expectation Posters – These posters will reinforce positive student behavior at Oak View.

Animal Rescue League – Students created dog and cat toys for the animals at the Animal Rescue League.

Benefits of Yoga – Students learned about the benefits of yoga practice and meditation.

Creating Lifelong Friendships and Acceptance – Students explored the benefits of developing relationships with older adults. They also hosted a grandparent breakfast at Oak View.

Comfort Care – Students raised funds to stock Oak View bathrooms with comfort care products.

Books for DCG Elementary Libraries – Students made audio recordings of books that are in elementary libraries.

Mustang Mentor – Students fostered relationships with North Ridge Elementary 4th graders.

Game Explainers – Students made instructional videos to help explain games for classmates.

Oak View Survival Guide – Students made a presentation to use for new students and 6th graders coming to Oak View next year.

Iowa History – Elementary Podcast – Students examined a few Iowa history stories and shared them with the community.

Grimes Farmer’s Market – Students helped promote the Grimes Farmer’s Market.
