Details: What is Girls on the Run? Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an evidence-based program for 3rd-5th grade girls designed to inspire individuals of all abilities to discover, build, and grow their self-confidence. GOTR curriculum helps participants to recognize their inner strength, increase their level of physical activity, imagine their possibilities, and confidently stand up for themselves and others. The 8 week curriculum is provided by trained volunteer coaches. Together, they experience a sense of belonging and connection as a team. Volunteer coaches facilitate lessons that blend physical activity with life skill development, including managing emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy. At the end of the season, the team completes a Community Impact Project and a 5K together, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and sets a confident mindset into motion. How can you help? Become a coach! Host a Team! Each Girls on the Run team needs at least two coaches each season to provide a safe, positive, and supportive environment for our participants. We have found that program sites are most successful when coaches are part of the community they serve. Teachers and caregivers make great GOTR coaches! All new coaches must complete online self-paced training modules and attend a 3 hour in-person National Coach Training session provided by GOTR of Central Iowa staff prior to the beginning of the season. Coaches must also consent to undergoing a background check and one coach at each practice will need to be CPR/First Aid certified. Coaches are provided with all the materials needed each season, so all you need to bring is your positive attitude and enthusiasm to the program! Coaches must commit to being present at most lessons (75 minutes, twice a week for 8 weeks) and to attending the End of Season 5K Celebration.
