Class Notes

The first week of the 2022-23 school year started with a smile. High school students in the Independent Living course wrote messages of inspiration on note cards and spread them throughout the building. Thanks for sharing your joy with us. Click here to watch the story.

Samana Biswa, DC-G senior was awarded the Multi-Cultural Vision (MVP) Scholarship. The MVP Scholarship is awarded to only 100 seniors in the state of Iowa and covers full tuition for eight semesters of higher education. In order to qualify for this scholarship, Samana wrote two essays based on a time when she felt discriminated. The MVP Scholarship also requires a teacher recommendation, that the student applying has a GPA higher than 3.0, and shows a financial need. Samana was born in Nepal and moved to the United States when she was in fourth grade. She plans to attend Iowa State University and study pre-med. She is involved in Show Choir, Choir, NHS, Key Club, Student Council and Rho Kappa. She was elated when she found out and is very thankful for this scholarship. Congratulations, Samana!

Congratulations to Sarah Frett, DC-G High School Junior, for being selected to the 2019 All-State Cheer team! The group will practice throughout winter at perform at the State Boys Basketball Tournament. Thank you to all those who were a part of the try outs and represented DC-G so well!

This summer, a Buddy Bench was installed at North Ridge Elementary thanks to the Olson Family. The Olson’s wanted a place for students to go on the playground when looking for friends to play with. This had been a great way to build community at recess. Thank you, Olson family, for fundraising to make our Buddy Bench possible!

Tyler Halverson and Zach Halverson, both DC-G students at Meadows, are in a band called Awakening Force. Over Labor Day weekend the band participated in the Iowa Rocks Talent Finals hosted by the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association and took first place. Congratulations, Tyler and Zach!

Jocelyn Richardson, a first grader at North Ridge, recently celebrated her seventh birthday. She was excited for her presents like many seven-year-olds on their birthday, but she wanted to do something special this year. Instead asking for presents for herself at her birthday party, she decided that she would donate school supplies for her classmates who needed them. She was full of joy as she and her dad delivered the many school supplies to help our families who cannot afford to purchase their own. Jocelyn, her family, and the friends who donated are the epitome of kindness and generosity. Thank you for being selfless and compassionate. We are so proud to have you represent our caring and thoughtful community.

Sarah Capps, an ninth grade student at Meadows, has a passion for helping people. She created a service project for the residence at Spurgeon Manor. She made 35 fleece blankets and wrote an individual card to go with each blanket.  “It was so much fun. Seeing their faces and hearing them say thank you was nice. It was also cool to see how happy they were to get to keep the blanket.”

Sarah is involved in 4H and the Meadows 8th grade band.  She has spent time volunteering for Alex’s Lemonade Stand and the Grimes Food Pantry. Earlier this year, she applied for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, an honor that highlights middle school students that are making a difference through volunteering. Sarah is consistently choosing to make a difference in her community and positively impact those around her.  “It doesn’t matter how old you are. You can do things that make a difference,” she says.
